5 Stars- A struggle for normalcy that could never be

“Love in Darkness” is the sequel to “Castles in the Sand”, of the Shattered Castle series by E.M. Tippetts.  In “Castles in the Sand” Alex leaves Madison, the love of his life, to serve on a mission with his church.  During this time period the two correspond very frequently as “friends”.  “Love in Darkness” occurs two years later with Alex returning to his home town of Pelican Bluffs.   Madison wants to resume their relationship but Alex had other plans.  He recently discovered that he inherited the same mental illness that debilitated his mother, schizophrenia.  Alex spent his whole life taking care of his mother, watching her condition worsen every day and he was not going to allow Madison to ruin her life by becoming his caretaker.  In his mind, Madison deserved better and he never really understood what she saw in him in the first place.  Madison does not give up so easily however and is determined that true love will prevail.

Before Alex is diagnosed with schizophrenia he was a professional caregiver to many of the people in the community with mental and physical disabilities and was truly gifted in this field.  With his own mental illness coming to the forefront in his life, he wonders how long he will be able to care for these people. It was heart-wrenching to follow along with Alex as he tries to control his symptoms, doing his best to deal with the voices in his head.  The details in this book are so intensely described that I actually felt Alex’s anxiety and fear as he struggled for the normalcy that would never be in his life.

This book is so eloquently written and really got into my head.  It was such an accurate representation of mental illness and the stigma it carries in society stemming from ignorance and prejudice.  I did not want this book to end.  Could there be another book in the series (please)?  I want to know what happens with Alex and Madison!  Excellent read!
